Your world of dreams

Three hundred and sixty five nights a year (366 during a leap year), we spend precious hours of our life in the world of dreams.
Sometimes we have happy dreams, and sometimes we have not so happy dreams. Sometimes we may even have frightening or terrifying dreams.
So why do we dream?

To answer this question, let us first get acquainted with the different types of dreams we have.

Basically, dreams fall into four general categories. First of all, the most common one these days is the indigestion dream where injudiciously eaten meals cause physical discomfort and this shows itself as a nightmare more often than not. Then there is the dream of what I call “wishful thinking’. The student wants to do very well, but he hasn’t put in the required amount of study. He dreams of being publicly applauded at a prize giving ceremony where he bags the first prize for studies. Wishful thinking. The third category is the precognitive dream. In this, the dreamer gets definite knowledge of an event which is about to take place. The final category of dreams is the one in which flashes of one’s past lives are revealed.

So how does this knowledge help when the majority of people are unable to remember their dreams when they awaken in the mornings?

Well, for starters you could train yourself to remember dreams. The way to do this is
To make a commitment to yourself that the moment you awaken, you will lie still for a few moments, gathering all that you can from the realm of dreams you have just left to come into wakefulness.
Then, before it fades away, write it down. Keep a dream journal, where you note down daily at least five sentences of what you have dreamt. As you do this on a daily basis, the five (perhaps initially incoherent) sentences will gradually increase to ten, then to a paragraph, then to a coherent and vividly described dream. If you would rather tape your voice into a tape recorder, that is perfectly fine. The idea is to record your dream in some way. Initially you may have only a word or two like, say, “forest”, “skies”, “ocean”, and as you think about it, more words will come to you, as part of the dream.
